As someone who typically steers clear of romance novels, I’ve found myself pleasantly surprised by Emily Henry’s work. Having read all her books, I can confidently say that while romance isn't usually my go-to genre, Henry's writing has a way of drawing me in. This week, I’m excited to share my thoughts on her latest book, Funny Story, which you’ve probably seen all over social media.
Sometimes you need a break from dense literary fiction and crave something lighter yet well-crafted. That’s where Emily Henry comes in. Her contemporary romances are not only delightful but also feature characters with depth and authenticity. One reason Funny Story resonated with me is because the protagonists, Miles and Daphne, are in their mid to late 30s. This age group isn’t often the focus in romance novels, which tend to centre around characters in their 20s. Their experiences and challenges felt refreshingly relatable.
In Funny Story, Daphne finds herself in a predicament when her fiancé, Peter, leaves her for his best friend, who also happens to be Miles' girlfriend. Left without a place to stay, Daphne moves in with Miles, setting the stage for a heartfelt and humorous journey. Henry’s strength lies in her ability to craft characters that grow and learn, making their journeys deeply engaging. What I love about Henry’s writing is the blend of humour and emotional depth. Funny Story is not just a light-hearted read; it’s a narrative where characters evolve, laugh, and cry, creating a rich, immersive experience. This isn’t a simple 'boy meets girl' story; it’s about personal growth and empowerment.
When reading this book, just like the characters, I laughed, I cried, and I couldn’t put it down. It’s one of those 'just one more chapter' books that you can easily devour. While it might not win awards for shocking twists, its charm lies in the relatable, well-developed characters. If you’re looking for a feel-good read, Funny Story is perfect for your holiday reading list because life is too short to read bad books.
I read Emily Henry’s Book Lovers and have been hooked on her books since. It’s her characters, they are so relatable, never perfect, just flawed humans.
Love Emily Henry's book - Book lovers is my absolute favourite (although many prefer Beach Reads)... I've really wanted to buy this one!!
